  3. Biologist Hans Walter Kosterlitz, Michael’s father, emigrated from Germany to UK in the 1930s, in order to escape the Nazis.

  4. In 1971, he was appointed to the faculty of the University of Birmingham, first as a lecturer & later as a reader. It was during this time at the university that he came in touch with fellow Nobel Prize recipient David J. Thouless.

  5. Over the years, Kosterlitz has been following many areas of research viz. condensed matter theory, electron localization, melting & freezing, spin glasses, phase transitions, etc.

  6. In October 2016, Kosterlitz along with physicists Duncan Haldane & David J. Thouless was bestowed with the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research towards theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. He receives one-fourth of the total prize money; his share being $2,32,500.

  7. Kosterlitz is a Professor of Physics at Brown University, US, where he joined the faculty in 1982.

  8. Additionally, Kosterlitz is a visiting research fellow at Aalto University in Finland. Interestingly, he was in the underground parking lot of this university, when he received the call informing him about the prize.
