Ritu developed interest in hockey in her childhood and started training at the age of 12 in Shahbad Hockey Academy, Shahabad Markanda.
Initially, she worked for Indian Railways, later she started working as a Police Inspector, but she switched to an Income Tax Inspector, as she had to run around a lot in Police Inspector’s job.
Under her leadership, Indian hockey team qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 36 years since 1980, won a bronze model in 2013 Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur and a bronze model in 2014 Asian Games.
Due to her shear talent, senior’s men’s team drag-flicker V R Raghunath suggested her name by Hockey India for the Arjuna Award.
She has played more than 250 international hockey matches for India.
She was dropped from the position of skipper and the 16-member Indian women’s hockey team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
She was replaced by Sushila Chanu as the Indian skipper just few weeks before the 2016 Rio Olympics kick-off, because of her poor form and attitude issues.
